I have always admired the Huawei Mate series for years ever since they were still known as the Ascend Mate. Its sleek aesthetics combined with the latest processors and Leica-engineered cameras have made the Huawei Mate as the best flagship smartphone to beat every year. I finally got the chance to review the Huawei Mate40 Pro last year and been using it as my main smartphone up to today. Approaching on my third month of using the Mate as my main phone, do I still think it’s the best flagship available? Here are 5 reasons why I think the Huawei Mate40 Pro is still the best smartphone to own right now.
PRO LOOKS
I have mentioned in my review that I am drawn to the Huawei Mate40 Pro’s looks. What makes it handsome and sexy are its curved-edges on the sides of the phone. I initially thought that Huawei has gone overboard with this bezel-less design but it functions pretty well and I rarely encountered accidental touches. The unique Space Ring design at the back looks futuristic compared to other flagships using the same rectangular camera modules. Lastly, the black color of my Mate40 Pro catches other people’s attention with its shiny glass exterior.
After 3 months, I am still awe-struck by its design and friends who have seen it became instant fans of the Mate40 Pro. Most of them liked the Space Ring camera module while the rest loved the curved-edge design. They think this phone definitely has the flagship looks and it will look suit well in the hands of a corporate executive whether attending a boardroom meeting or a black-tie social event.
PRO PROCESSOR
The Huawei Mate40 Pro is equipped with the Kirin 9000 processor, Huawei’s most powerful and the world’s first 5 nanometer SoC (Software-on-Chip) with built-in 5G modem. This chipset can do anything from basic smartphone tasks to playing mobile games at their highest graphic settings. Not only it provides the ultimate speed and performance, the Kirin 9000 helps the Mate40 Pro have better power management. A busy day of using the phone still lets me have enough juice to enjoy watching Netflix by night time.

2020 was the year 5G started to roll out in the Philippines and this is definitely a must-have feature in a flagship phone. The Huawei Mate40 Pro thanks to its Kirin 9000 chip is 5G ready. With my 5G network, my Mate40 Pro lets me have uninterrupted video calls and Zoom meetings as well as download large files for work. During my leisure time, the 5G-powered phone lets me watch videos from streaming services like Viu and Netflix without buffering. On YouTube, I even set the app to Full HD so I can enjoy watching high resolution videos without any lags.
PRO CAMERAS
I am aware that other smartphones have four cameras built-in, but I can say that the triple cameras of the Huawei Mate40 Pro are one of the best, if not the best found in a flagship smartphone. In three months, I have taken a lot of photos and videos for my work in our office, for my blog and social media accounts. I rarely use my mirrorless camera because I am already happy and satisfied with the excellent photo and video capabilities of the Mate40 Pro. PRO ECOSYSTEM
I have reviewed a lot of Huawei devices last year and it gave me the chance to try out their ecosystem. I was very impressed with my experience that it deserves to have a blog post dedicated to it (watch out for that this coming February!) The Huawei Mate40 Pro can seamlessly work with my Huawei MateBook 13 and MatePad Pro thanks to their Multi-Screen Collaboration feature. By simply tapping the Mate40 Pro, the phone’s interface would appear on my MateBook or MatePad’s screen. I can start/answer a call, send and receive messages and transfer pictures, videos and other files with ease without having to physically hold the phone. I have seen this feature before with a competing brand, but it’s only Huawei who has made this feature very functional and convenient.
