ASUS Announces the ZenFone 2

ASUS has unveiled its newest flagship phone, the ZenFone 2, at the on-going 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier today. Banking on the success of its predecessor, ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih has touts that its a “smartphone that embodies ambition”, and with we can see that the company is trying its best to deliver.

ASUS ZenFone 2

The 4G/LTE-compatible ZenFone 2 has an elegant brushed metal finished with edges that curve to a 3.9-millimeter depth and minimal bezels that only go for 3.3 millimeters. It features a 5.5-inch full HD Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display with a 403ppi pixel density, which is lower than Samsung’s S5 and LG’s G3, but manageable for a flagship.

Under the hood, the ZenFone 2 is powered by the 2.3GHz 64-bit Intel Atom processor Z3580 and runs on either a 2GB or an industry-first 4GB RAM (yes, you read that right), beating Samsung (which has announced last year that they’re mass producing the first 4 Gigabyte LPDDR4 mobile DRAM for phones and smartphones) to the punch.  It also comes with ASUS’ newest ZenFone UI on top of the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.

The ASUS flagship gives you a 3000mAh battery, which is nothing new, but at least it’s fast-charging and can juice up to 60 percent in 39 minutes.

One of the highlights of the ZenFone 2 is its camera: the rear snapper goes for 13MP with an f/2.0 wide-aperture lens that allows better light capturing, making photos 400% brighter at night even without flash. And speaking of flash, you won’t have to worry about looking washed out, as its equipped with ASUS’ Real Tone Flash to keep warm colors intact.

A curious inclusion is a Trend Micro security software. Companies seem to be beefing up device security with the onslaught of malware and other threats, but though it’s generally a good thing, it may just also mean that current options no longer work and that people behind such attacks have gone far lower than what most of us have thought. As The Verge’s Nathan Ingraham has said, “If we’ve reached the point where we need anti-virus software on our smartphones, we have utterly failed society.”

That aside, the ZenFone 2 looks like its well on its way to becoming a big name contender with its 4GB RAM, but ASUS may need to beef up some of its features. Then again, we can’t have it all, so we’ll have to wait and see if its good enough for its price, which will soon be announced.
