First Look: Alcatel Idol X+ Real Octa-Core Smartphone – Unboxing, Specs, First Impressions

Alcatel Idol X+ 01

Oh, Alcatel! Just like Nokia, this French brand’s selection of mobile phones in the 90s is always a good #Throwback topic.

Has anybody seen or owned this phone model before? I used to call it the “Safeguard” phone because it really looks like the bar soap brand.

It’s great to hear that Alcatel is still alive and selling well in various markets. Here in the Philippines, Telcos like Smart and Sun Cellular offer Alcatel Smartphones for their postpaid plans. My brother even got one, an Alcatel Scribe, as a retention package from Sun Cellular.

Now, Alcatel is going to enter the high-end smartphone segment with the release of their newest smartphone model, the Alcatel Idol X+. I got a review unit with me thanks to my friends in Alcatel Philippines.

THE UNBOXING

Alcatel Idol X+ 02

Seen on the photo above are the USB charging cable, USB charging head, a pair of in-ear earphones and earplugs.

Alcatel Idol X+ 03

This REALLY caught my attention. A pair of JBL earphones as part of the package? Big time si Alcatel ah! If we want to have the best brand in audio, then you should get anything from JBL. I can’t wait to test this out.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Alcatel Idol X+ 04

I like how the Idol X+ was designed which I also found comfortable to hold. It feels so light and even if it has a glossy back cover, it doesn’t feel slippery at all. Alcatel also did a good job fitting in a 5-inch Full HD Display without making it a phablet. With this size even the ladies would be interested to use this beautiful beast.

Alcatel Idol X+ 05

My caveat so far in the Idol X+ is the positioning of the previous button on the phone. Most Android smartphones place the previous button on the right side so I found it disconcerting because I am so used with the old placement. Not a big factor for me, as I’m sure we can get used to this setup.

Alcatel Idol X+ 06

The Idol X+ is a Dual-SIM smartphone with Dual-Standby and supports 2 Micro SDs. They’re not that hard to insert. All you need to do is just push the other side of the door and insert the MicroSIM. There are no other doors found on the Idol X+ so do not attempt to remove the back cover. Battery is non-user replaceable and its built-in storage of 32GB is non-expandable too. Personally, 32GB for an Android device is fine, but there’s OTG support anyway which I will be check on my review.

Alcatel Idol X+ 07

The speaker grills are properly placed at the bottom of the smartphone which I think is the ideal location. So far the sound is loud with a couple of tunes I’ve played. Btw, these are not just speakers, these are Hi-Fi (High Fidelity) speakers which I expect to produce outstanding pure sound experience. I can’t wait to use these JBL earphones with the Idol X+!

Alcatel Idol X+ Antutu

I know, I know, I sound like a broken record already telling everyone that I do not believe in benchmark scoring. But because I am the only one so far using this smartphone, I’ll share my screenshot of my Antutu Benchmark score. With 2.0 GHz Octa-Core goodness, the results are definitely impressive.

Alcatel Idol X+ 08

So that’s my first look of the Alcatel Idol X+and I will take it for a spin for a week before posting the review. If you want to go ahead and buy the Idol X+, the SRP is Php 18,999.00 and is already available at selected mobile phones shops in the Metro.

  1. “My caveat so far in the Idol X+ is the positioning of the previous button on the phone. Most Android smartphones place the previous button on the right side”

Bakit ako, ilang android phones na gamit ko, puro nasa kaliwa ang prev button. using Xperia L and Xperia Z now, nasa kaliwa parehas ang perv button. buti na lang naka-root. I used Gravity Box to transfer the prev button on the right side which I prefer. 🙂

  2. OT, BTW, ang hirap magsulat ng comment o magbasa ng comment. yung floating ads nakaharang either sa comment box o sa actual comment. no way to close the ads…
