AOC C27G1 27″ Curved Gaming Monitor Review

My desire to purchase a Gaming Monitor is like a lighting switch – it goes on and off for more than a year now. Since the pandemic will not go away anytime soon, it will force me to stay at home most of the time. This means, I have a reason to purchase a gaming monitor and probably build a gaming PC too. Gaming monitors from AOC have been under my radar for almost two years now and I think they offer good value for their monitors. They offered me to review the AOC C27G1 27″ Gaming Monitor which I immediately agreed because I’ve never tried one before. Let me share my AOC C27G1 27″ review and find out if I will consider buying this for my personal use.

THE LOOKS AND FEEL

AOC C27G1

This is my first time to review a gaming monitor this large and I thought I would be contented with the usual 24″ sized display. I can imagine I would enjoy a lot more playing with a bigger screen.

At first look, I thought the C27G1 has bezels on top and its sides. I discovered that these “bezels” are part of the display.

The power button and On Screen Display buttons are found under the lower right side of the monitor.

The curved back of the monitor has some red accents in its black silhouette. No fancy, loud, futuristic designs. No RGB either. It appears to me that the AOC C27G1 means business and it just wants to deliver what it offers – fast paced immersive gaming.

Ports are found at the back of the C27G1. These are two HDMI 1.4, DisplayPort 1.2, VGA and 3.5mm headphone jack. Sadly, it doesn’t have a USB port.

The display is attached to a two-legged metal stand. The C27G1 can be tilted vertically and tilted sideways. Its height can be adjusted too according to your preference. It also can be attached to a VESA compatible wall mount.

THE DISPLAY

AOC C27G1

The C27G1 has a 27″ curved display with a Full HD resolution and 16:9 screen ratio. What’s interesting, at least for me, is its use of a VA (Vertical Alignment) panel. I’ve only used TN and IPS displays before so having a VA panel for a monitor is something new to me. I did a research and learned that VA Panels are like a combination of the best features found in TN and IPS displays: they offer good picture quality and fast response which is why the gaming monitor has a 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time.

True enough, I find the colors of the C27G1 accurate and doesn’t have the annoying yellowish tint of a TN panel like what I’ve reviewed before for another gaming monitor. Viewing angles are also good. Some might complain about the lack of 4K resolution but personally, I’m fine with Full HD since I want to use it more for gaming.

THE PERFORMANCE

AOC C27G1

Setting up the C27G1 is straightforward and it only took me a matter of minutes. I initially used it as an external monitor for the ROG Zephyrus S GX502 gaming laptop I was reviewing weeks ago before I made it as a temporary monitor for my TUF Gaming FX10 Gaming Desktop so I can use its displayport cable. The FX10 has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 but I learned that the C27G1’s Freesync technology can work with this GPU. True enough, the monitor was detected by NVIDIA Control Panel and enabled its G-SYNC feature.

It took me a while to get used to the monitor’s On Screen Display menu. I’ve always mistaken the power button for a menu button. I always prefer four-way control buttons rather than left and right buttons. The menu display isn’t visually pleasing compared to another monitor I reviewed in the past but nevertheless it’s pretty straightforward to understand. Under Game Settings, the C27G1 lets me change game mode displays that would suit my gameplays. It supports FPS, RTS, Racing and 3 gaming profiles which can be customized. I had it set to FPS since I play a lot of this type of games.

AOC C27G1

I am so used to playing with 144Hz refresh rate that I cringe whenever my frames drop to 60 fps. I’m happy to say that the AOC C27G1 does what it advertises: provide 144Hz refresh rate goodness in all of my games. I mostly play FPS games like Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and most recently, Valorant and these games were fantastic with the C27G1. Gameplays were ultra fast and smooth with 120+ fps while quality remains sharp. I didn’t experience any screen tearing during the course of my review thanks to the monitor’s Freesync technology. The large 27″ curved display gave me a bit more of an immersive experience than what I usually get from a 15″ laptop display.

I’m generally happy with the monitor, but I wish they could improve the positioning of the On Screen Display menu buttons and make them easier to navigate the menu. Also, it would be great if the C27G1 would also have built-in speakers.

DR’S CONCLUSION

AOC C27G1

My experience with the AOC C27G1 was really good. Its retail price of P16,110 is really tempting for me to buy, so I checked if there are any other gaming monitors with a 27″ display, 144Hz refresh rate and 1 ms response time or better with the same price. There was none, so this gaming monitor is definitely a good deal. It’s not flashy, there’s no RGB, but I don’t really mind. What I need are the goods which the C27G1 is able to deliver.

I’ll be saving up this month and hopefully I’ll be able to buy my own AOC CG27G1 for my personal use.
