OPPO Reno 10x Review – A High-End OPPO Phone I’m Willing to Buy

I mentioned last year that I want to use a different brand for a flagship smartphone. Since 2011, I’ve been switching between iPhones and Galaxy S series phones and eventually settled for the Samsung Galaxy Note9. One of the brands I had my eyes on was OPPO when they released their Find X phone last year. It was a good attempt by the Chinese brand to take a stab at the flagship smartphone market, but the camera even with its new pop-up feature falls short compared to other high-end phones. But that didn’t stop OPPO from learning from their mistakes, and the OPPO Reno 10x is their way to make its way back to fight along with the big boys of the smartphone market.

THE LOOKS AND FEEL: OPPO RENO 10X ZOOM REVIEW

OPPO Reno 10x Review

The first thing I noticed upon holding the OPPO Reno 10x is its weight. It’s heavier at 210 grams compared to the Find X’s 186 grams. Eventually, I was able to get used to its weight, until I attached the case that came with the package which made it not only even heavier than before, it became also quite bulkier to hold.

OPPO Reno 10x Review

While I would strongly suggest to use the case with the Reno 10x, the phone would be deprived of showing the world of its handsome body. No, it doesn’t have gradient colors that became popular in 2018. OPPO subdued the color schemes with not-so-flashy ones: Jet Black and Ocean Green. The colors are not eye-catching, but the simplistic design left me in awe.

OPPO Reno 10x Review

The Reno 10x uses a USB Type-C connector. The 3.5mm headphone jack was not brought back, but that’s alright. What made me happy is the inclusion of a MicroSD card slot in the SIM Card tray. 256GB of storage should be enough for some people, but you’ll never know if you’re gonna need those extra storage.

THE DISPLAY: OPPO RENO 10X ZOOM REVIEW

OPPO Reno 10x Review

One of the features that draws me to the Reno 10x is its large gorgeous screen. Thanks to its almost bezel-less display, the display size was increased to 6.6-inches. The large AMOLED display is so bright and pretty, it makes my video streaming viewing always pleasurable, even under the sun.

What I also like about the screen is the total absence of the notch. The front camera is hidden and would pop-up for face recognition or for taking selfies (more on that later.) The screen also has a fingerprint scanner which consistently recognized my fingerprints.

THE PERFORMANCE – OPPO RENO 10X REVIEW

While OPPO relies on MediaTek’s chipsets for their mid-range smartphones like the OPPO F11 Pro, they have tapped Qualcomm to power up their Reno smartphone line. The Reno 10x is supplied with one of the fastest mobile processors to-date: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. We did some benchmark tests with the Reno 10x and was blown away by its results.

As expected, the phone worked exceptionally well. Didn’t experience any apps crashing and juggled as much apps as I can. Played PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends at their highest video settings and none of them produced any hiccups to the Reno 10x. Heat wasn’t much of an issue either even after long gameplays.

Paired with the Snapdragon 855 processor is a generous amount of 256GB storage and 8GB of memory. These are the same specs I require for a flagship phone in 2019, and thanks goodness the OPPO Reno 10x has it. Having said that, I wish OPPO also included at least wireless charging to its set of features.

THE CAMERAS – OPPO RENO 10X REVIEW

OPPO Reno 10x Review

The OPPO Reno 10x is equipped with a triple camera system composed of 48 Megapixels with a Sony IMX 586 sensor, 13 Megapixels and 8 Megapixels with ultra-wide lens. Compared to the Find X, OPPO’s flagships cameras this year are much better. Let me share my sample photos:

I was really impressed by the photos I’ve taken indoors. Some of them can even pass as photos taken by a DSLR camera! There were some events I didn’t bother bringing my DSLR camera anymore and just relied on the Reno 10x’s cameras.

OPPO has been hyping up on the 60x zoom as early as February this year. They also posted a teaser about it weeks before it was launched. We tested the zoom features of the cameras in our first impressions post and found it extraordinary! Honestly, you don’t have to max out the zoom lens to take photos. Here are some photos taken from wide-angle to 6x and 10x zoom:

The details still look sharp even with Reno 10x’s zoom lens.

The 16 Megapixel front camera is a downgrade from Find X’s 25 Mgeapixels but it can still take good photos.

Overall, I found the Reno 10x’s cameras reliable for day-to-day use.

THE BATTERY – OPPO RENO 10X REVIEW

OPPO Reno 10x Review

My usage of the Reno 10x always lasts for a day with moderate to heavy usage, which consists of at least 4 hours of streaming videos, 1 hours of games and the rest for other usual phone activities. The VOOC Charger lets me charge the phone’s 4,065 mAh battery quickly in a little over an hour.

DR’S CONCLUSION

OPPO Reno 10x Review

I was kinda heartbroken with the OPPO Find X, but the OPPO Reno 10x made up for it. Most of the features I require in a high-end smartphone are present and can let me capture professional-quality photos and videos with confidence.

Unless the rumoured OPPO Reno 2 is true, then the OPPO Reno 10x will be my next smartphone.
