Upcoming ‘Reno’ Smartphone is OPPO’s Latest Flagship

OPPO is further expanding its product line up with “a new product line” in the form of Reno and, if the leaks are to be believed, OPPO is pulling no punches with this one.

Earlier this week, OPPO Vice President Brian Shen, took to Weibo to announce Reno with an accompanying comment by the company’s account stating that this was not a sub-brand, but an entirely new product line. Judging by the colorful artwork, Reno could be geared more towards the lifestyle or photography crowd. This would be in stark contrast to its sister company’s (Vivo) efforts with its gaming IQOO smartphone.

A more recent leak, again on Weibo, revealed a good chunk of the device’s specifications including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, a yet-to-be confirmed 32 MP Sony IMX510 sensor by Sony, and a triple rear lens setup consisting of a 48 MP Sony IMX586 sensor, a 120-degree wide angle sensor, and a 10x lossless zoom telephoto lens. Apparently, the main sensor and the telephoto lens will feature variable aperture technology, much like the ones found in the OPPO R17 and Samsung Galaxy S10.

Speaking of which, Reno will also supposedly feature a Dynamic AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 and HDR10+ support. This type of display has only recently debuted with the Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e. Curiously, the leak also suggests that a more accurate form of in-display fingerprint sensor will also be used for the Reno, something that is “15 times better” than optical sensors, so an ultra-sonic sensor perhaps? Lastly, the haptic feedback motor may also be getting an upgrade, as it will be using an x-axis motor instead of a z-axis motor.

Aside from the no-brainer choice of a Snapdragon 855, the Reno will also be paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. 8 GB + 256 GB and 10 GB + 256 GB models will also be available. For battery, the Reno will be equipped with a 4,065 mAh batter and can be juiced up with OPPO’s signature Super VOOC fast charging tech that goes up to 50W. Further highlighting the flagship nature of the Reno is the rumor that it might also be getting a 5G variant, utilizing a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem.

There’s more (models), apparently there will also be a Lamborghini version, packing a larger 5,000 mAh battery, 12 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, plus a liquid metal body. A Reno Light Deluxe Edition is also planned, with a Snapdragon 675, the same triple lens setup, except that this one’s telephoto lens goes up to 5x only, and an AK377A audio chip.

While this recent leak remains unconfirmed, the OPPO Reno launch event is scheduled to happen on April 10 in China. So if you’re at all interested in OPPO’s latest huge strides in mobile photography, be sure to keep your eyes peeled on that date.
