First Look: Huawei P40 Pro Unboxing, First Impressions, Antutu Benchmark, Photo Samples

We normally review entry-level and mid-range phones from Huawei so we weren’t really expecting to review the new Huawei P40 Series which was announced two weeks ago. But last week, Huawei Philippines offered us to review the Huawei P40 Pro! Of course we agreed to do it since we’ve been wanting to review a P-series phone for years. I purchased a Huawei P9 Plus when it was launched in 2016 and that was the only time we reviewed it in The CP Republic. I also had the P20 Pro for a while when I bought it from a fellow tech blogger in 2018 but I didn’t bother to review it anymore. Now that the Huawei P40 Pro is my main phone, I will be sharing my unboxing experience and first impressions of the phone.

HUAWEI P40 PRO UNBOXING

Ah yes, having this type of box means I am getting one of the best smartphones today. The white minimalistic box only has the name of the phone with the Leica logo. Only the P and Mate Series phones (except for the Lite version of the P series) are co-engineered with Leica. Now found at the bottom of the box is the Huawei App Gallery. As most of us know by now, Google Play services are no longer existing with Huawei devices so they are heavily promoting their new store for apps. I will dwell into that in another article.

Inside the box are the Huawei P40 Pro, a Silicon Case, USB Type-C cable, 40w USB Charger, USB Type-C earphones, SIM Card Ejector and some pamphlets.

The first thing I wanted to check in the P40 Pro is its Quad-Curve display that was explained during Huawei’s online launch. They claimed that it is the only one phone to have this type of display so it looks definitely unique. I like the Quad-curve display because they make the phone look futuristic, however, it might annoy if not worry other users.

Watching videos while holding the phone in landscape mode might cause the video to skip. It happened to me a few times because my thumb was positioned at the curved side of the screen. The four sides of the phone with the screen exposed can be prone to damages caused by accidental falls. A phone with frames surrounding all the sides will only result to dents in case it falls on the ground and will prevent the screen from cracks.

These can be avoided by using a case that surrounds the corners of the P40 Pro. I used the silicon case included in the package for the time being until shops are open again to sell third party cases.

The P40 series have different types of colors and finishes in their back covers. I think this is a good move on their part because they are offering more color options for their customers. The review unit I got has a Silver Frosting color with matte finishing. I think this is the most popular color among us reviewing this phone. It may not have any gradient color like the previous models, but it looks very stunning. Also, with the matte finishing it lessens fingerprint magnets on the surface. In my opinion, this is the best silver phone I’ve seen in years!

The cameras at the back are neatly arranged. It looks sophisticated which adds value to this high-end phone. These aren’t big compared to the Samsung Galaxy S20 series.

Phone is not that heavy and it’s comfortable to hold. The curved edges made it easier for me to hold as it doesn’t hurt my palm while holding it with one hand.

I have high regards to Kirin processors, especially the Kirin 980 which powered the P30 Pro and the Nova 5T. The P40 Pro is powered by a newer Kirin 990 5G processor so I installed the Antutu Benchmark app to check on the score. I’ll be posting more about its performance in my full review next time.

Of course, I had to try the P40 Pro’s Cameras. I was able to take several photos outdoors but only when I go to the hospital for my treatments. Here are some sample photos:
