From 2000s Nostalgia Gaming to Discovering New Titles Today—Thanks to IGV

After being busy for the first month of the year 2026, I wanted to take a break from all the projects I’ve been working on. While my mind was on idle mode, I suddenly recalled those days in the 2000s when I would play PC games with my late best friend Norbert. We played at a place called Gamefrog, a cool and chill gaming shop located in Metrowalk. We would spend hours and hours playing, sometimes even until the shop gets closed.

Then I figured, why not play those games we played before?

Fortunately, PLDT Home Life provided me with a 12-month complimentary IGV Game Pass as an eligible PLDT Home Fiber subscriber! IGV has a curated library of over 200 PC games, including popular AAA and indie titles. I reckon they should have the old games Norbert and I have played before.

I installed the IGV program on my laptop and I was in awe with all the games available in their library. I immediately searched for the games, and surprise! They’re in IGV alright!

First Downloaded Game from IGV: Left 4 Dead 2

IGV

The first game I downloaded and installed was Left 4 Dead 2. This game brought me a lot of memories almost 20 years ago. I first played Left 4 Dead with Norbert and another friend Matt where we teamed up killing zombies with various weapons. Left 4 Dead 2 was the follow-up, with a new story, more unique zombies to scare, or even annoy you.

Man, would you believe I haven’t played this game since 2009? Admittedly, I even bought a pirated copy just to be able to play at home. I don’t have to worry about that now because the games by IGV are all original so I am not breaking any laws this time.

The first scene of the campaign was on the rooftop of the building. I picked Ellis, who’s a talkative young mechanic with a southern accent. Since I am the only one playing, Coach, Nick and Rochelle were all controlled by AI, so they follow me wherever I go. I picked a handgun as a weapon of my choice, and because I still remember this game even though I haven’t played it in a long time, I know I will be able to get better weapons along the way. The first task of our mission is to get down to the safe house.

This certainly feels like 2009 again. I still remember how to navigate this hotel but somehow I forget there were zombies hiding in some of those rooms. Then there’s the new infected zombies like Charger, Spitter and Jockey, who would appear one or, as your luck would have it, two at the same time. But the scariest of them all is The Witch. Her crying sounds like a girl who’s not yet infected. She actually won’t do you harm, unless you catch her attention. That’s exactly what happened to me, because I was unaware she was in the area where I shot at one of the zombies. The Witch shrieked then sprinted and started pummeling me. Fortunately, my teammates were able to save me.

I was able to upgrade weapons along the way. I got a Double Beretta then eventually found a machine gun which makes it easier to kill zombies. It is also helpful to find molotov or other types of bombs especially for situations when a group of zombies start to mob us.

When we got out of the safehouse, it was already daylight. This doesn’t mean zombies were not present to get us. This was different from the first Left 4 Dead, meaning, the zombies have evolved. I found difficulty in the gun shop where the owner ordered us through the radio that we have to get his cans of cola first. Getting the colas were easy, but getting out of the shop with zombies approaching us non-stop wasn’t. I forced myself out and used the cans of colas as weapons, hitting the zombies that came my way. After delivering the goods, the owner was able to help clear the zombies and we were on our way to the next safehouse.

Second Game from IGV: Counter-Strike 2

IGV

The next game I downloaded from IGV was Counter-Strike 2. I’ve been playing Counter-Strike since 2001 but I wouldn’t say I was good at it. I just played it leisurely and I rarely play it with friends. In 2007, Norbert and I played CS in a game shop near our workplace after office to relieve stress. While we were at odds due to our boss’ Machiavellian tendencies, playing Counter-Strike was like our truce to each other.

Unfortunately, the iconic de_dust 1 map isn’t included in the game. I had to settle with de_dust 2 which is still a classic. Our team started playing as Terrorists and I was tasked to carry the bomb. I kinda stumbled so we lost our first 2 games. We won the next one and we earned more money. I bought a better gun and was now able to kill some of the Counter Terrorists. I planted the bomb with one Counter Terrorist left. However, because he didn’t take the risk to approach the bomb site with me waiting, we both died when the bomb exploded!

In the next match, I played Counter Terrorist. Instead of moving with my team, I used a different path and attacked the Terrorists by surprising them. It worked once for me, but the second time I tried it again, I was the one who was surprised. I ended up getting killed. We were able to get a lot of money from winning so I decided to buy the most expensive sniper rifle. Killed one of the Terrorists but because they were two, the second was able to beat me before I got to shoot him. Anyway, we were able to win that match.

Third Game Downloaded from IGV: Trying Something New

IGV

Though the last game wasn’t really an old one, I’ve been curious about it ever since it got released a few years ago. CyberPunk 2077 got everybody talking before and now I have a chance to play it thanks to IGV. I installed the game and for my character I selected V as a Nomad.

My first task was to go to a radio tower and communicate with Panam Palmer who would give me the location of Jackie Welles. I went to Jackie’s location to pick up the goods which would cause us trouble after leaving the border. There were vehicles shooting at us so I had to slightly move out of the car window and shoot at them. That was an exciting scene! This was a shooting car chase! After losing the vehicles, we found a hideout and opened the package, which was an iguana. It was decided we would go to New City which was the next chapter. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to play more but I will definitely revisit this game again.
