PLDT Enterprise announces that Smart Communications, Inc. has achieved GSMA Open Gateway certification for its SmartSafe RoamStatus API. This marks another global milestone in advancing standardized and inter-operable network APIs for Philippine enterprises.
This latest certification for Device Roaming Status API builds on Smart’s earlier achievement as the first Philippine telco to achieve GSMA Open Gateway certification for Number Verification APIs from GSMA, the global industry body for mobile network operators. This enabled PLDT Enterprise’s launch of SmartSafe SilentAccess in November 2025 – the first network-powered silent authentication solution in the Philippines.
“Since we first launched these globally-certified SmartSafe APIs and toolkits, we’ve benefited from inputs from enterprise customers to prioritize the highest impact features they require. Expanding our suite of globally-certified APIs with SmartSafe RoamStatus reinforces our commitment at PLDT Enterprise when we first launched SilentAccess: To develop solutions with advanced security capabilities that strengthen digital trust, without compromising user experience,” says Nico V. Alcoseba, First Vice President and Head of Product Management and Innovations at PLDT Enterprise.

SmartAdding context to authentication
This innovation lets companies instantly check whether a customer’s mobile phone is being used inside the country or abroad. Instead of relying on user input or tracking location details, it simply gives a clear yes‑or‑no answer: is the phone roaming or not? This makes it easier for businesses to spot unusual situations, reduce fraud, and add an extra layer of security during sensitive activities—without asking customers to do anything or exposing their personal information.
By using real‑time signals from the mobile network, SmartSafe RoamStatus helps businesses see whether a customer’s activity makes sense for their situation. For example, if a banking transaction happens while a phone suddenly appears to be roaming overseas, it can trigger extra checks. This is especially useful for banks, online stores, and digital platforms that need to protect customers from fraud. The information is handled responsibly, with subscriber awareness and consent, and is used only to improve security and trust.
Global standards, secure by design
The GSMA Open Gateway initiative, developed in collaboration with the CAMARA open-source project under the Linux Foundation, ensures that network APIs are standardized, inter-operable, and secure. Through its participation in the certification program, Smart demonstrated full compliance with Open Gateway technical requirements and CAMARA security standards, further elevating its role as a trusted provider of secure network capabilities.
“Smart’s certification is a strong signal of the Philippines’ leadership in advancing Open Gateway API adoption and unlocking the power of mobile networks to enable greater innovation across the Asia-Pacific region,” said Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific at GSMA. “Certified APIs are critical to building trust and enabling cross-operator interoperability, allowing digital services to be delivered at scale through standardized, secure, and consistent network capabilities.”
GSMA Open Gateway Certification follows a structured testing program designed to ensure that mobile operators and API providers deploy standardized APIs that comply with CAMARA standards and specifications. By promoting consistency and interoperability across networks and markets, the certification enables developers and enterprises to integrate trusted network capabilities more easily and scale digital services across borders.
More than 300 mobile networks, representing over 80% of mobile connections worldwide, are now aligned with the GSMA Open Gateway initiative. This growing ecosystem brings together mobile operators, developers, technology partners, and system integrators through a common API framework, helping businesses deliver services more consistently and securely across multiple networks and markets.
Beyond RoamStatus and SilentAccess, the SmartSafe suite will expand to include:
- SmartSafe NetIdentity: Verify SIM and device authenticity
- SmartSafe GeoCheck: Identify real-time network location
- SmartSafe KYCPlus: Enhance identity verification via network intelligence
Collectively, these innovations position SmartSafe as the everyday guardian of digital safety: powered by Smart’s nation-widest mobile network, backed by GSMA’s global standards, and aligned with Philippine regulators in strengthening the country’s digital trust framework.
Integrated ecosystem, powered by network superiority
Built on Smart’s nationwide superior mobile network, these innovations leverage on real-time signals that enterprises can trust for critical security decisions. These are among the capabilities across PLDT Enterprise’s integrated ecosystem – spanning fixed and wireless connectivity, cloud, data centers, platforms, and global reach – aimed at empowering organizations to innovate while safeguarding every digital interaction.
