This is the first time that are about to experience a laptop that is huge. ASUS ROG gave us an opportunity to review the ROG Strix SCAR 18 2024, which is a laptop that has an 18-inch display and is loaded with the highest specs possible for a laptop.

The Design
You will want to know first how much the ROG Strix SCAR 18 2024 weighs because of its size. The good thing about it, even though it is huge, compared to other 18-inch laptops in the market, it is the lightest in the group, weighing only 3.10kg.
The ROG Strix SCAR 18 2024 dimensions are 15.71″x 11.57 x 0.91 inches. It has a really beefy size that makes it quite hard to carry to places, and it won’t fit in many laptop bags; however, ASUS ROG included a laptop bag that can fit your Strix SCAR 18.
Looking at the laptop’s design, it has a simple ROG signature black design which suits well as it is paired with colorful RGB accents that are well-placed. Sadly, the laptop’s materials are mostly plastic, which is disappointing for its price.
When you open up the lid of the laptop, you can see it has a full-sized RGB backlit keyboard with some additional buttons that are dedicated to volume, microphone mute, performance profile, and allowing you to open the ASUS Armoury Crate app.
Typing on the keyboard is good, as it is light to press and not mushy to type on. As for its trackpad, it has a good size and is smooth to glide your finger on. It is good that they still have a huge trackpad, even if you will for sure play your games with a gaming mouse.
Its ports offer decent options for its I/O ports. On the right side, you will have the power port, Ethernet port, HDMI port, two USB-C ports, and combo headphone port. On the left side, you will see the two USB-A ports.
You can utilize the USB-C ports for hooking up a display as they have DisplayPort support, and you can charge as it includes in the box a 100W USB-C charger. However, it lacks a card reader; if you need one, you’ll have to buy an external card reader.
For the webcam, which is placed center above the display, it has a simple 720P HD camera that is sufficient for video meetings. However, given the price, I am expecting at least a 1080P webcam.
The Display and Speaker
The ROG Strix SCAR 18 2024 has an 18-inch Mini-LED display with 2,304 dimming zones and a refresh rate of 240Hz, with an aspect ratio of 16:10, making it a 2.5K resolution or 2560 x 1600 pixels. The benefit of the Mini-LED is its ability to deliver many dimming zones, which results in better contrast compared to a typical IPS display.
Aside from that, its color accuracy is impressive, boasting a DCI-P3 100%, making it a good laptop for your graphics or video editing works. When you play games on this laptop, it offers a fluid gaming experience thanks to its 240Hz refresh rate and Nvidia G-Sync support. Other certifications include Pantone Color Validation, DisplayHDR 1000, and support for Dolby Vision HDR.
With its huge size, you would expect a better audio experience with this laptop, but unfortunately, that is not the case. The ROG Strix SCAR 18 features a 2-speaker system that is placed underneath the laptop. The sound quality can sometimes be muddy and not that loud, prompting you to use headphones to truly immerse yourself when gaming.
The Performance
The ROG ROG Strix SCAR 18 2024 that we are reviewing is equipped with the Intel Core i9-14900HX, which has up to 5.8GHz, 24 cores, 32 threads, and 36MB cache, making it the fastest Intel processor available right now. Paired with it is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU with 16GB GDDR6 VRAM. As for the RAM and storage, it has 16GB x 2DDR5-5600MHz with a 1TB NVMe from SK hynix.
We ran various benchmarking apps and game benchmarks to gauge its performance. We benchmarked it while plugged in and set it to its performance mode for most of our tests. Throughout our tests, it really showcased its dominance, scoring high in all the benchmarking apps we threw at the laptop.
Aside from the benchmarking apps, it also demonstrated its performance when playing games. It can certainly handle AAA games for several years, and you will immerse yourself when playing with this huge laptop that has a fast refresh rate.
In our normal usage of the laptop, what I can say is that it is great for heavy processing tasks like video editing or creating a 3D model. It really didn’t hinder our work.
However, during our benchmark session, even though it has a huge chassis, the temperatures were hitting around 100°C. But during normal use, it didn’t exceed 90°C, and we didn’t experience any performance throttling.

The Battery
The battery capacity of the ROG Strix SCAR 18 2024 is a 90WHrs 4-cell Li-ion battery. As usual with this kind of high-end gaming laptops, you will not last long without a wall adapter nearby. In our YouTube playback test in Silent Mode, it only lasts 2 hours and 57 minutes, which is decent compared to other high-end gaming laptops.
That is why ASUS ROG included two chargers in the package: the 100W USB Type-C charger will be your portable charger as it is not that heavy compared to the other charger, which is a 330W charger. However, if you use the 100W charger, it will prevent you from using its turbo mode, although the performance mode is already sufficient for multitasking and heavy-load tasks.

However, its short battery life and plastic construction may deter some buyers despite its exceptional performance.
