Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 First Impressions

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is one of the most sought-after premium smartphones (thanks to K-drama fans *wink*) announced in this year’s Samsung Unpacked event. We got an opportunity to take a closer look on this fashionable foldable phone before the Philippine launch next week. Here’s our first impressions:

The Body

At first glance, you will barely notice any changes in the overall construction of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. However, if your take a closer look the hinge is slimmer and endures more folds in the long run.

Similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, it also has an IPX8 rating making the phone water resistant up to 1.5 meters deep at 30 minutes max. Unfortunately, like the Z Fold 4 it also lacks dust resistance, but that’s forgiveable due to the folding aspect of the phone.

Checking the sides of the Z Flip 4, the volume rocker and the power button are found on the right while the SIM Card tray is found on the left. The power button also functions as a fingerprint sensor for added security. The Z Flip 4 can accommodate one Nano-SIM but it supports an eSIM. At the bottom, you will find the USB Type-C port, speakers, and microphone. As expected, it doesn’t support MicroSD cards for expanded storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes in 2 colors to choose from Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, and Blue.

The Display

It still carries the same main display from its previous generation. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is equipped with a 6.7-inches 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED with a resolution of 1080 x 2640 pixels. Sadly, the cover display retains its 1.9 inches Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 260 x 512. But it is now using a Gorilla Glass Victus+ for protection.

The Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes now with 3,700 mAh battery compared to its previous generation’s 3,300 mAh battery. We will discuss its battery life when we get an opportunity to review in the near future.

The Camera

No dramatic changes happened in the camera department. It still has the 12 MP wide main camera and 12 MP ultrawide camera in the rear. The selfie camera is still a 10 MP wide camera. However, Samsung told us that they increased the sensor size for the rear but they didn’t reveal by how much exactly. They also boast of its Nightography which you can find in Samsung Galaxy S22 series.

Photos taken with the rear camera produce sharp images and good colors. Same as the selfie camera it captures crisp images and good colors. Due to the limited time and space, we weren’t able to try to stress test the camera.

Here are some sample photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4:

The major improvement overall comes in the cover screen of the Samsung Z Flip 4. It now has the ability to make a quick reply and use more widgets. They also added more clock designs to choose from.

Besides optimization to apps, they also added more usability when the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is on Flex Mode. One of the added features is a touchpad which makes the bottom half of the screen controlled like a mini-laptop. You have to access the Samsung Lab setting to enable this feature.

Initial Thoughts for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a few more features compared to previous generation. Making it durable than ever and refreshed hardware.

We don’t have a review unit yet, but we will update everyone though the blog as soon as we have one. As always, we’ll be testing its durability, performance, cameras and battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is retailed at P58,990 for its 128GB/8GB, P62,990 for its 256GB/8GB, and P69,990 for its 512GB/8GB. You can now pre-order the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 on the Samsung website.
