We had the opportunity to review one of the most powerful gaming laptops on the market, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18. The big question is whether it justifies its steep price tag. With such a premium cost, it is a serious investment, so it is crucial to know if it truly delivers in terms of performance and value. In this review, we will take a closer look and determine if the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 is really worth it.

The Design
The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 makes its presence known right away. With its massive 18-inch display, bold gamer aesthetic, and premium build quality, there is no mistaking that this is a gaming laptop.
The chassis feels solid and well-built, while the RGB accents and light bar highlight the gaming DNA that ROG is known for. ASUS also added AniMe Vision, an 810-LED matrix shining through 9,152 precision-milled holes, allowing you to personalize the laptop with custom animations, imported GIFs, or subtle effects that match your style.
One thing I do not like, however, is the aluminum finish. It easily picks up smudges, even when your hands are just resting on it, which takes away from the premium feel.
Moving on to the keyboard, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 comes with a full-size layout loaded with features like per-key RGB lighting, n-key rollover, dedicated media controls, macro keys, and durable switches rated for more than 20 million presses. The feedback is tactile and satisfying, assuring you that each press registers accurately. That said, I do have an issue with the placement of the Print Screen button. Positioned at the bottom, it often gets in the way during games like 2XKO. While pressing keys around the “J, K, L, M, , and .” area, my hand sometimes slips and accidentally hits Print Screen, which freezes the screen for a moment and disrupts the experience.
The touchpad has also been upgraded to a larger size. While it is responsive and smooth, I feel its placement could be shifted slightly more to the right. As it is now, the wrist tends to overlap onto the touchpad when resting, which can be uncomfortable over long sessions.
In terms of connectivity and I/O, ASUS has covered almost everything you need. The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports that offer massive bandwidth for external drives, docks, or high-resolution monitors. You also get a 2.5G Ethernet port, HDMI 2.1, three USB-A ports, and a Full HD IR camera with Windows Hello support for quick and secure sign-ins. Wireless connectivity is handled by the latest Wi-Fi 7, ensuring fast and stable speeds. The only thing missing here is an SD card reader, which would have been useful for creators.
The Display and Speaker
The display on the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 is an absolute treat. It features an 18-inch ROG Nebula HDR panel that uses Mini LED technology with a 240Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, and a sharp 2560×1600 resolution. This combination delivers smooth gameplay, vibrant visuals, and plenty of detail whether you are gaming, editing, or watching content.
ASUS packed the display with premium features, including G-Sync, Pantone Validation, and DisplayHDR 1000 certification. They also added a dual ACR layer that reduces reflections by up to 55% and enhances perceived contrast up to 4.5 times, making the panel look even more impressive in various lighting conditions.
In our test with the SpyderX Pro, the panel covered 100% of both the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts. The measured gamma was 2.2, and indoor brightness reached 574.9 nits, which is excellent for both gaming and creative workloads.
Audio is another strong point of the SCAR 18. It comes with a 4-speaker system tuned with Dolby Atmos, consisting of two tweeters and two woofers powered by Smart Amplifier Technology. The placement of the speakers, just below the lifted display, directs sound toward the user. The result is audio that is loud, clear, and full, with strong bass and well-balanced mids.
For online meetings or voice chat, the laptop also includes AI noise-canceling microphone technology, ensuring that your voice comes through clean and professional even in noisy environments.
The Performance
The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU running at a full 175W TGP. In Turbo mode, the system allocates 55W to the CPU and 175W to the GPU, while Manual mode raises the power ceiling up to 255W, giving you maximum performance when needed.
Our review unit came configured with 64GB of DDR5-5600 memory (2x 32GB) and a fast 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. Storage and memory upgrades are made simple with ASUS’ thoughtful design. The bottom panel uses a tool-less mechanism, so you can access the internals without needing a screwdriver. Both the RAM and SSD slots are easy to reach, and the SSD bay uses ASUS’ Q-Latch system, which eliminates the need for screws. There is also a vacant M.2 slot available, allowing you to add a second SSD for even more storage.
When it comes to performance, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 feels incredibly fast and responsive. Opening apps is near-instant, and it can handle heavy workloads like video editing, graphic design, and browsing all at the same time without breaking a sweat. Multitasking is effortless, so you can switch between multiple apps with Alt+Tab as much as you want without worrying about slowdowns.
On the gaming side, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 is a true powerhouse. It easily dominates modern AAA titles at high settings, delivering smooth gameplay and stunning visuals. For some of the most demanding games, lowering a few settings can help push frame rates higher to fully take advantage of the laptop’s fast refresh rate display. With this kind of performance, you can expect the SCAR 18 to stay capable of running new games for several years.
However, with a machine this powerful, effective cooling is critical. ASUS addressed this by equipping the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 with a triple-fan setup, an end-to-end vapor chamber, a sandwiched heatsink design, and Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal for superior heat transfer. Even with all this power, the laptop can hit temperatures up to 100°C, but what is impressive is that it manages to sustain performance without throttling.
ASUS includes its Armoury Crate software with the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18, and it remains one of the most useful tools for managing a gaming laptop. From here, you can monitor system performance, adjust fan speeds, and switch between different performance modes like Silent, Performance, and Turbo. If you want even more control, the Manual mode lets you tweak power limits and fan curves to suit your needs.
Armoury Crate also handles all the customization features of the laptop. You can sync the RGB lighting across the keyboard, light bar, and AniMe Vision, or create your own effects to match your setup. It also serves as a hub for updating drivers, checking system stats, and even launching games directly.

The Battery
The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 is equipped with a 90Wh battery, which can power the laptop for around 1 hour and 30 minutes during regular work. In our YouTube video playback test, it lasted only 1 hour and 43 minutes. This is expected, as the performance-packed hardware naturally comes with higher power consumption, resulting in shorter battery life.
Fortunately, ASUS includes not just the large 380W charger but also a lighter 100W USB-C charger in the box. This gives you flexibility which you can carry the smaller charger when you do not need the full power brick, making it easier to move between rooms, meetings, or on the go.

That said, it is not perfect. The laptop is bulky and heavy, the aluminum finish is prone to smudges, and battery life is limited. Its premium price also makes it a serious investment, which may not be practical for everyone.
